Don grew up in the Bay Area and at an early age started classical piano lessons. In high school he switched to trumpet and later switched to drums as his main instrument. During this time he was a snare drummer for the world famous Concord Blue Devils drum corp., which helped develop his skills and technique. He has been influenced by many great drummers including Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Roy Burns, Dave Garibaldi to mention a few. Don began studying theory and harmony, and with encouragement from his high school band teacher, began writing for the jazz band . He was offered full music scholarships to Berklee college of music, University of Nevada Reno and University of Hawaii Oahu. He chose to study at a local college and continue gigging around the bay area. He was approached to write some horn arrangements for a Las Vegas lounge act, and eventually put together a 9-piece band and went on the road as musical director and arranger. This lead Don to LA and a number of years of studio work at Paramount and other LA studios. During this time he recorded and toured with the 50's group 'The Five Platters' as their musical director, arranger and drummer. He moved to San Diego in the early 80's and began gigging with notable local musicians Dwight Stone, Carl Evans Jr, Hollis Gentry and others that ultimately formed the jazz group 'Fattburger'. At this time Don took a hiatus from professional music to pursue an electrical engineering degree. After many years of absence from the 'scene', Don decided to release an album of his music. Don plays all instruments on these tunes and also did all the recording and mixing. He has a second album in the works which should be out next year. Hope you can find something you like . . .
