This CD can be looked upon as a sampler or introduction to the epic collection of the 24 CDs of the complete CIM series released on Sounds of YesterYear. Even Stan Kenton cannot have realised at the start how great was the debt he would owe the NBC radio network, as he struggled to rebuild his band from the financial failure of Innovations. The weekly live broadcasts termed 'Concert in Miniature' brought the publicity and the impetus needed to rejuvenate interest in Stan's music. Choosing around twenty titles to represent the 'Best Of' from a total of some 400 performances, is at best a subjective task, and at worst, well nigh impossible. So we settled on selecting what we hope is an entertaining program of diverse music, that presents soloists, arrangers, and the orchestra in the best possible light. In the main, We have purposely omitted well-worn solo feature titles on the grounds they were already over-familiar. And while the selection is generally chronological, there are small deviations in the interests of effective programming.
