PETER TOSH LIVE AT THE ONE LOVE PEACE CONCERT --- JAD 1009

Peter Tosh
PETER TOSH LIVE AT THE ONE LOVE PEACE CONCERT
$14.99

Kingston Jamaica 1978, all hell is breaking loose on the island and the living ain't no way easy. Fact is, the political violence, always a tradition in JA, has reached a level that's so literally murderous that certain sections of downtown Kingston are virtual free-fire zones. The two political parties and their hired thugs are shooting it out on the streets daily. Two years before, during election time, Bob Marley had narrowly escaped assassination, and was still in self-imposed exile in London. Finally an uneasy truce on the streets between opposing sides results in the announcement of the 'One Love Peace Concert' on Saturday, April 22nd, in Kingston's National Stadium, starring many top names in reggae ---as well as Marley and Tosh.

What you have on this disc is the aural record of Tosh's incendiary performance and no-apologies comments to the economic and political ruling class of his nation. Imagine what it would be like for Bruce Springsteen (or Chuck D) lecturing the leaders of Congress and the White House at a concert where those top heads of state were sitting in the first two rows, while thousands watched and applauded statements that went straight to the government's head. To do this in a country where the situation is literally explosive and murderous, where 'rule of law' has broken down in the urban areas, took cajones to the 3rd degree, to say the least. Adding fuel to Tosh's comments is a performance generally considered to be his finest, a career peak delivered in a fire-and-brimstone judgement on an uneasy and squirming political establishment. Tosh's remarks and music are SO in-your-face that it makes the posturing of later-day wanna-be's such as Rage Against The Machine seem childish.

And talk about the Music!! I've always felt Tosh was under-rated as a guitarist, and you can hear how he lead the hand-picked backing band(Sly & Robbie, Mikey Chung and one-time Marley lead Al Anderson on guitar)with his chopped, wah-wah pedal rhythm work , driving things along like a machete chopping through brush. Impassioned vocals carry the highlights of Tosh's songbook---'Stepping Razor', '400 Years', 'Equal Rights' and the anthemic'Legalize It'---all delivered as denunciations of Jamaica's staus-quo.

You want rebel music?? You want eloquence and passion in music with a fury most artists in any medium can only dream of?? Punks, metal heads and rappers wish…. It comes as no surprise that within months of this reggae tour-de-force the police in Kingston have nearly beaten Tosh close to death, after his arrest for marijuana possession. "I am not a politician, but I suffer the consequences", he told the audience that night, and truth reveal, y'know?

22 years after the event, you can hear for yourself. Peter Tosh. NO ONE in reggae stood stronger than this Rasta.
