Kinky, “Atlas,” Nettwerk America. I liked three or four songs on the previous Kinky album a whole lot. This album doesn’t have any break-out hits, but it sure as heck sounds great from start to finish. Kinky is an electronic dance band from Mexico, and they don’t leave behind their indigenous rhythms – or their Spanish language. This stuff is energetic, vibrant, rhythmically flexible, melodically interesting. There is no single category that contains these guys. A single song could contain crunching power chords from guitar combined with squealing new wave synthesizers, a catchy Latin melody, and hard driving dance rhythms. But, it all works. I don’t know how much attention this band is getting, but they deserve a whole lot more.

Bo Diddley, “The Essential Bo Diddley,” Spectrum Music. Every once in a while, it’s good to be reminded how great the old masters really were. This English compilation has all the familiar classics – “Bo Diddley,” “I’m A Man,” “You Can’t Judge a Book By the Cover,” “Who Do You Love,” “Mona (I Need You Baby),” “Road Runner,” “Pretty Thing,” “Say Man,” “Diddley Daddy,” “Pills,” aw heck, there are 20 songs here – and you can’t help but love each and every one of them.
