  Listen Up! 11/4/02 Listen Up!

Monday, Nov. 4

Beck, “Sea Change,” Geffen Records. I like “The Golden Age,” which takes the gloom and doom of the rest of the record, and adds a melody with more than just the straight up and down path across a few notes that weighs down the rest of the record. Scariano told me somebody told him this album compares to John Cale’s “Paris 1919.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the gravitas that Cale brings to his own songs of gloom and doom. When Beck moans, you figure he’s just feeling a little down. When Cale moans, you think the apocalypse came along, and left him sitting on the corner.

Field Mob, “From Tha Roots to Tha Toota,” MCA Records. These guys are intriguing enough to make me want to listen more closely than I’m capable of doing right now. I love when I hear rappers with their own style, and there seems to be two of them here. The beats are interesting, and the words flow, swirl, slide, hop, and generally move as if obstacles are meant to be gotten through. Very nice.
