Charles Mingus, “Mingus Ah Um,” Columbia Records. I haven’t heard this remastered version of the first jazz record I ever owned until today, even though it came out five years ago. It sure sounds great. The music is of course, impeccable, rolling, thundering, stomping gospel jazz, with my favorite version ever of “Better Git It In Your Soul,” not to mention exquisite balladry as heard on “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.” Mingus’ music expressed so much joy, so much tenderness, so much love of life itself. He made many albums I consider to be essential; this is the most essential of them all.

The Speaking Canaries, “Get Out Alive: The Long Version,” Scat Records. This, however, is extremely not essential. It’s just some guy wanking around with guitar feedback, and grinding his fingers into the fretboard, while a drummer bashes some odd-ball rhythmic figures. No, that’s not a good metaphor. Wanking implies that there is a pleasure involved which is distinctly lacking from the music on this CD. Yuck.

John Lee Hooker, “Face to Face,” Eagle Records. I haven’t had much chance to comment on things today, and I don’t have enough to say about this record except to acknowledge its existence. These are recordings Hooker started before he died a couple years back, and they’ve been finished by his daughter Zakiya and a host of unobtrusive guest stars, including Dickey Betts, Elvin Bishop, Warren Haynes, Van Morrison, Johnny Johnson, and Johnny Winter. It’s really quite nice, a mixture of old classics done at the end of his life, and a few unfamiliar songs, as well.
