  Listen Up! 9/12/03 Listen Up!

Friday, Sept. 12

ZZ Top, “Mescalero,” RCA Records. Another great record from the world’s most explosive Texas boogie band. Upon first listen, I’m struck by how much “What Would I Do” sounds like a Meat Puppets outtake circa “Huevos.” Great power trios think alike, I guess. At any rate, Billy Gibbons continues to amaze on guitar, and there are more catchy and oddball songs to add to the tradition. Maybe too many, since there are 16 cuts, but I haven’t heard anything worth eliminating. No recycling here.
