  Listen Up! 9/5/03 Listen Up!

Friday, Sept. 5

Shelby Lynne, “Identity Crisis,” Capitol Records. Lynne changes directions once again, this time recording a decidedly intimate (albeit with frequent vocal overdubs) and somewhat more country record. Some of these songs, especially “Lonesome” and “10 Rocks” sound spirited enough, but the majority are in the downbeat mode. As always, Lynne’s vocal presence is tough and tender at the same time. I hear enough here to make me want to investigate this record further, and based on her track record, I expect it to reward my efforts.

Carole King, “Tapestry,” Ode Records. When I was 13, this was my favorite record in the world. I still love these songs, even though I can recognize the arrangements are a little more tepid than they really should be. But, oh, such melodies! Exquisite stuff.
