KDHX Radio, “Memphis to Manchester,” John Wendland DJ. I normally prefer to play CDs in the office, but the combination of excellent radio reception this morning and the debut of John Wendland’s new show (after a year or so of late night programs) has me tuning in the airwaves. This show is among my very favorite shows on radio in St. Louis and possibly anywhere. Wendland rocks Joe Tex, the Band, the Jam, Chuck Prophet, the Easybeats, and all sorts of other terrific artists. He’ll play obscurities by great bands, familiar tunes, brand new unknowns, rarities, and more. He rarely takes a misstep, he mixes things up with a logical flow that can’t be taught, only intuited. Oh, by the way, he’s on 88.1 KDHX (broadcast on the web at www.kdhx.org), Friday morning, 8 to 10 am Central Time.

Calexico, “Even My Sure Things Fall Through,” Quarterstick Records. An intriguing compilation of odds and ends from this diverse combo. They mix indie rock with Mexican horn charts and odd Morricone soundtrack influences. I never love them, but I always seem to like them.

Rick James, “The Best of Rick James: The Millenium Collection,” Motown Records. No home should be without a decent Rick James compilation. This one is decent, though it strangely does without “Fire and Desire,” one of the most over-the-top elaborate erotic ballads in the history of r’n’b, a thing that ran for twenty minutes when I saw James and Teena Marie do it live at the Arena 21 years ago. But, it delivers the New Wave funk that was his bread-and-butter, including “Super Freak,” “Mary Jane,” and “Give It To Me, Baby.” Rick James liked sex, and he liked marijuana, and he liked to show off what he liked. This music is perfectly in keeping with his favorite themes.
