  Listen Up! 6/4/03 Listen Up!

Wednesday, June 4

Leo Connellan, “Crossing America,” Skuntry Records. Here’s a fascinating album. Leo Connellan was a poet who hitchhiked across America in the mid 1950s, then wrote an epic poem about the experience. Not that I’ve ever heard of the guy, but here it all is on the liner notes (sensibly put on the back cover). Anyway, shortly before he died two years ago, Connellan recorded a reading of the poem, and former St. Louisian Chris King went to various cities (including our own) to record musical arrangements behind and around the reading. Alt-country meets free jazz, though never at the same time. It’s a delight to hear, and I expect it’ll be even richer when I can hear the words better at home or in the car some time. Right now, you gotta go to www.skuntry.com to pick this up. Oh, the musicians include Rosco Gordon, Brian Henneman (of the Bottle Rockets), and St. Louis jazz star Dave Stone.

Steve Pick will be taking a short vacation, and you won't see any new columns until next Tuesday or Wednesday, June 9 or 10. We assume he will be more intelligible after shutting his mind down for a few days, but we can't say this for sure.
