  Listen Up! 6/3/03 Listen Up!

Tuesday, June 3

Led Zeppelin, “How the West Was Won,” Atlantic Records. I saw Led Zeppelin in 1977. They were pretty bad. I saw “The Song Remains the Same.” It was pretty horrible. I’ve spent my entire adult life believing these guys were a terrible live band. This new three-CD set of performances recorded in 1972 prove the importance of gathering enough information before making a determination like that. These guys were brilliant. This is easily the best Led Zeppelin album ever made. They are so much more fluid, more exciting, more inventive, more raucous than their studio recordings. Listen to this and begin to understand just how mighty a band they really were.
