The Rezillos, “Can’t Stand the Rezillos: The (Almost) Complete Rezillos,” Sire Records. It was 1978, and punk rock ruled England. Along came the Rezillos, a band with punk rock buzzsaw guitars and minimalism, but with clear show-biz entertainment aspirations. Crazy costumes inspired by TVs “Thunderbirds,” giant hooks and catchy melodies, lyrics about being on “Top of the Pops” and flying saucers, the Rezillos made rock’n’roll that matched the energetic requirements of their time but which ultimately stands outside of any movement. For 25 years, I’ve been able to turn to this album (the first 13 cuts of the CD, not that I’ve got any problem with the rare single included as bonus tracks, or the 13 killer live tracks from the rare UK only second album) once in a great while, and it has always sounded as fresh and exhilarating as it did when I first bought it.
