Fleetwood Mac, “Say You Will,” Reprise Records. It sounds better and better the more I hear it. Lindsay Buckingham’s guitar playing is exciting and perfectly controlled, as always. The vocal arrangements are lovely, with the two voices (and occasional multi-tracks) weaving around each other beautifully. The melodies are memorable and clever. The musicianship is impeccable. This record deserves all the success it seems poised to achieve.

Sir Douglas Quintet, “The Prime of Sir Douglas Quintet,” Music Club. All Doug Sahm records are worth hearing, though I don’t guarantee they’re always gonna hit you in the right way at the right time. Basically, Sahm, especially when helped out by organist Augie Meyers, tears into basic rock’n’roll and r’n’b material with a casually aggressive approach unique to him. It’s all soulful and powerful, but there’s a real laid-back feel at the same time. This CD collects a bunch of mid-sixties stuff, and it’s fine, but not consistently brilliant.
