The Fleshtones, “Do You Swing?”, Yep Roc Records. It’s hard to imagine staying essentially the same for 25 years. Same hair styles, same 50’s clothes, same New Wave/garage musical approach. The only thing different is the lines on their faces which weren’t there on their earliest records. I had no idea these guys were even still together. The Fleshtones were never a band I could love, but I always enjoyed hearing them now and again. They looked back to the sixties garage aesthetic, but with an ear which had obviously heard Richard Hell and Television and the Ramones. These guys probably thought it was a little bit arty to play songs that sounded so much like the work of suburban high school kids before their time. Except for the production sounds, which are rawer and less chained to fashion than ever before, any song on this record could have come from any record this band ever did in its career. Pick hit to click: the raucous cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown.”
