Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, “Pig Lib,” Matador Records. Understand, I pretty much hated Pavement. Understand, I don’t really know a lot about prog rock. But, the idea of Stephen Malkmus (Pavement frontman) doing his version of prog is kinda pleasant. Not exactly something worth get excited about, but at least its an attempt to make music that doesn’t just exist in the realm of reflexive irony that Pavement used to inhabit. These expanding prog riffs may be insipid, but they also may be charming. And the lengthy song structures allow for some dynamics. In fact, since there’s nothing really memorable in Malkmus’ melodic sense, dynamics could be the single advantage this record has. And he rides that advantage to decent effect.
