  Listen Up! 2/24/03 Listen Up!

Monday, feb. 24

Musiq Soulchild, “Aijuswanasing,” Def Soul Records. This debut album from a couple years back is still a pleasant listen, but not as enticing as the stuff I’ve heard from his follow-up. His lyrics are far too prosaic, and his melodies stand just on the verge of liquidity. A lot of sing-song stuff, albeit done with lovely vocal overdubs. The beats give it a nice lilt, though.

Jeannie Kendall, “Jeannie Kendall,” Rounder Records. She sure can sing purty. I’m not feeling a lot of real connection with the emotions of these songs, though part of that could be the distractions around the office. This is an acoustic bluegrass-based album for the former Nashville mainstream country star (when she was in the family group the Kendalls).
