Swan Dive, “June,” Compass Records. Who are these guys, and how did they learn to write such compelling, stick-to-the-ribs-hooky little pop songs? Influences? Late 60s pop a la Dusty Springfield and Brazilian chanteuse material. Only way less contrived than that probably sounds. Several of these songs are truly magnificent, especially “Katydids” and “Girl on A Wire,” both of which come in lovely basic pop arrangements and nifty modern dance remixes. Also, I love “Have You Ever Been In Love,” the only song here where the guy sings lead instead of the woman. It’s a gorgeous little love song that captures the spring in your step when you’re deliriously happy.
