Jacky Terrasson, “Smile,” Blue Note Records. Both Elvis Costello (who made it “Cruel”) and Terrasson have named recent albums after Charlie Chaplin’s greatest musical contribution. Interesting. Terrasson has always been a solid pianist, but he seems to be making a new leap on this outing. He’s all over the map, as usual, too restless to stay in one stylistic place. But, this collection of standards – he also plays Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” Miles Davis’s “Nardis,” and everybody’s “My Funny Valentine” – doesn’t include a single cliché. Inventive, exciting, delicate and adventurous, Terrasson deserves way more attention than he’s getting.
